What are Instagram Sponsored Ads?
Instagram Sponsored Ads are paid posts or stories that marketers promote on the platform. If you are an active user on Instagram, chances are, you have seen one example of a sponsored ad, maybe without even noticing!
They look just like regular Instagram posts or stories but with the “Sponsored” word on the content. They can also include a Call-To-Action (CTA) button such as “learn more” to drive traffic or conversions.

How to Set Up Sponsored Ads on Instagram (Step-by-Step)
You can set up an Instagram ad in two ways. You have the option of promoting an existing post or creating a new post for your ad. Promoting an existing post is simple and you can do it through your Instagram app. However, you will not be able to customize the post as much as you may want to.
The second option is creating an ad post from scratch. This can be done through your Meta Ads Manager where you have lots of customization options. Here is how to set up an ad in Ads Manager.
Choose Your Objective
- Instagram ads have several objectives based on your goals:
- Awareness (brand awareness, reach)
- Consideration (traffic, engagement, app installs, video views)
- Conversions (sales, leads)
Define Your Target Audience
- Set up your audience based on demographics such as:
- Location (e.g., countries, cities, or specific areas)
- Age
- Gender
- Interests (hobbies, behaviors)
- Custom Audiences (retarget people who have interacted with your business)
Set Your Budget and Schedule
Budget Options:
- Daily Budget: Maximum amount you want to spend each day.
- Lifetime Budget: Maximum amount you want to spend over the entire campaign.
- Schedule: Choose whether to run your ad continuously or set a start and end date.
Choose Ad Placements
You can either let Facebook automatically place your ads (including Facebook and Instagram) or select Manual Placements.
For Instagram, choose placements such as Instagram Feed, Instagram Stories, Instagram Explore, or Instagram Reels.
Select Your Format
- Instagram supports several ad formats:
- Single Image or Video: Use one image or video.
- Carousel: Showcase multiple images or videos in a single ad.
- Collection: A group of items to make it easier for users to browse and buy.
- Stories Ads: Full-screen, vertical ads that appear between user stories.
Create Your Ad
- Add your media: Upload the images or videos you want to use.
- Write your copy: Create an engaging caption and include a strong call-to-action (CTA).
- Add a URL: If your ad objective is to drive traffic to a website, make sure you include the destination link.
